The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation on Wednesday announced its 2026 fellows, including three from Maine and a fourth who studied here.
The prestigious creative fellowships, established in 1925 by mining magnate and U.S. Sen. Simon Guggenheim, provide recipients a stipend of up to $100,000 “to pursue independent work at the highest level under the freest possible conditions.”
This year’s 223 fellows were chosen from a field of nearly 5,000 applicants in 55 disciplines, according to the foundation.
Maine winners include: fiction writer Jessica Anthony of Portland, photojournalist Samantha Appleton of Rockport, and poet Myronn Hardy of Portland.
Anthony and Hardy are professors at Bates College in Lewiston.
Another 2026 fellowship recipient, photographer riel Sturchio, a visiting assistant professor at the University of Iowa, is a 2012 graduate of Maine College of Art and Design in Portland.
