If you got a text message from Maine’s court system over unpaid fines and that raised eyebrows for you, good job.
Delete and move on with your life.
It is, in fact, yet-another scam trying to separate Mainers from their hard-earned money.
The Maine Judicial Branch on Tuesday warned that texts are being sent to Mainers with an image of a “final enforcement notice” and a demand for payment for traffic violations, including unpaid tolls, speeding tickets and sundry parking violations.
“The Judicial Branch never sends enforcement notices or demands for immediate payment by text,” the court system said in a statement.
For the record, NO state or federal agency will EVER ask you to pay fines, etc., over text message. That’s nowhere near bureaucratic enough.
The Maine Judicial Branch urged Mainers to not scan the QR or bar codes in the message or click on any links. And if you did, do not give them your personal information.
Armed with the knowledge that this is a scam, go ahead and ghost them.
