Truth must establish the foundation for our democracy. Therefore, the delivery of said truth by local, regional, and statewide newspapers is rather essential, in order for citizens to make informed decisions regarding their communities.

Fortunately for the greater Maine community, Susan Young, as the opinion editor of the Bangor Daily News (BDN), has dedicated herself to providing reliable truth for her readership. At times, publishing the truth in its good, bad, and ugly dimensions is rather difficult, but necessary. In this regard, her efforts to consistently provide what I consider the truth allows the BDN readership an opportunity to respond, providing sound feedback and, in some cases, forging novel solutions.

Ergo, the greater Maine community should applaud and continue to support Young’s efforts in this worthwhile endeavor.

Sometimes, understanding the printed news may be difficult, but BDN cartoonist George Danby has provided a creative solution. His artwork captures the human emotions associated with experiencing the truth of current events and the impact of said events on our everyday lives.

His valuable artistic contributions reminds one of Boss Tweed’s famous comment regarding the well-known political cartoonist Thomas Nast: “Stop them damn pictures [cartoons] ……my constituents can’t read. But, damn it, they can see the pictures [cartoons].” Therefore, Danby, keep supplying us with your wonderful and insightful “pictures.”

Lastly, the combination of both the written word and the visual picture can and does provide the greater Maine community with the truth needed to foster and, thereafter, support a vibrant democracy.
