Video obtained by the CBS 13 I-Team shows the moments leading up to a man being shot by police in Hancock County over the weekend.
The I-Team obtained the video through a public records request from the Maine attorney general’s office.
It all happened in Stonington on Saturday afternoon, when the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called for a man threatening to burn down a family member’s home. When the deputies confronted him, he pulled a gun from his waistband.
The 35-year-old man, who we’re not identifying, was shot by a deputy but is expected to recover.
In the video, you can see him cock the gun after pulling it from his waist. He’s then seen raising the gun in the air, toward his head.
The deputy then shot at the man four times before providing first aid.
The suspect was then taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
It’s unclear if that suspect is facing any charges.
The deputy, John Stanley, is on administrative leave, which is standard protocol whenever a police officer uses deadly force.
The Maine attorney general’s office will now investigate if the use of deadly force was justified.
Under state law, it has six months to make that determination.
