What Is Netflix’s ‘Beef’ Season 2 About? What to Expect Before Tuning In

The three-time Golden Globe-winning Netflix dark comedy Beef returned April 16, 2026, with a new cast, a new setting and a very different kind of conflict — one rooted in a real argument creator Lee Sung Jin overheard between a couple.

Season 2 stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan as one couple alongside Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny as another. All eight episodes are available on Netflix now.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new season before tuning in.

What Is ‘Beef’ Season 2 About?

Season 2 centers on two couples divided by generation and power. Josh and Lindsay, a millennial pair played by Isaac and Mulligan, are watching their marriage collapse. Josh manages a country club where Austin and Ashley — a Gen Z couple played by Melton and Spaeny — work under him.

The plot kicks off when Austin and Ashley witness a violent argument between Josh and Lindsay. That moment sets off a chain of manipulation and rivalry at the country club.

“We changed the setting to a workplace because I wanted to explore the boss-employee dynamic more,” Jin told Netflix ahead of the premiere.

“Rather than a ‘boomer couple versus younger couple’ setup, which we’ve seen a lot before, we thought, what if we actually made them a little bit closer in age and highlighted the generational divide between the millennial couple and the Gen Z couple?” Jin added.

Like season 1, the new installment explores issues of class, gender and racial inequality. But the tone shifted.

“Season 1’s beef is so overt and aggressive. I thought season 2 should be the inverse: a passive-aggressive beef, which is more true to life, especially in a workplace,” Jin told Netflix in a separate interview.

Was ‘Beef’ Season 2 Inspired by a True Story?

Jin’s creative spark for season 2 didn’t come from the road. He overheard a heated argument between a romantic couple in their home.

When he described it to friends, their reactions split along generational lines: younger people viewed it as possible domestic violence, while older people saw it as a typical couple’s conflict.

“I think what inspired me was not the actual incident, but hearing people’s reactions to it,” Jin said in an interview with Reuters, published April 14, 2026.

Those contrasting reactions became the foundation of the season. Jin told Reuters he wanted to juxtapose “different stages of love against one another.” When he pitched the idea to Netflix, executives responded enthusiastically, telling him they could sense his passion for the concept.

The cast felt the weight of that foundation.

“[The argument] needed to feel real — enough to be something that could be held over us,” Mulligan told Reuters. “Not just how it looked, but how it sounded and what we said to each other.”

“You feel like you’re inside the characters’ minds,” Melton added. “You either relate, judge, or think, ‘I’ve been there too.’ That’s what makes it such a juicy experience to watch.”

“All these possibilities start to collapse,” Isaac added, per Reuters. “It can feel claustrophobic, because we’re told anything is possible.” Ultimately, he added, “you have to let go.”

Who Else Makes Up the ‘Beef’ Season 2 Cast?

Beyond the four leads, the supporting cast features Youn Yuh-jung (Minari, Pachinko, The Wedding Banquet) as Chairwoman Park and Song Kang-ho (Parasite, Broker, Memories of Murder) as Dr. Kim.

Other cast members include Seoyeon Jang (Butterfly) as Eunice, William Fichtner (Mom, Talamasca) as Troy and Mikaela Hoover (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Ava.

Musician BM makes his acting debut as Woosh. Finneas O’Connell — the brother of Billie Eilish — is behind the music.

Season 1 starred Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. All 10 episodes were released in April 2023, and the series won Golden Globe Awards in three categories: best limited series and acting honors for both Yeun and Wong.

While neither Yeun nor Wong appear on screen in season 2, both returned as executive producers.
