One of the largest plumbing and heating wholesalers in the northeastern U.S. is expanding to Caribou.
The Granite Group, a New Hampshire-based company that currently operates 10 sites in Maine and more than 100 throughout the Northeast, will open a new location on Main Street in June.
The expansion announced Monday, which also includes the acquisition of a distributor in Sanford, will bring the company’s Maine locations to 12. The Granite Group has had a long-standing presence in southern Maine, but has rapidly expanded its footprint in recent years.
The company purchased the former Gilman Electric Supply building at 408 Main St. for $450,000 in April, according to a real estate transfer tax declaration.
The Granite Group is a wholesale distributor of plumbing, heating, cooling, piping, water systems and energy products.
It added facilities in Bangor, Augusta, Lewiston and South Portland in 2019, when it acquired Webber Supply. Within the last 18 months, the company has further expanded to Ellsworth, Brunswick and Windham.
The Granite Group is the second largest wholesaler of plumbing, heating, cooling, and piping products in New England, and the 34th largest in the U.S. by sales, according to an annual ranking compiled by the Supply House Times, an industry publication.
In New England, it trails only the Massachusetts-based F.W. Webb Company, which departed Caribou and opened a 43,000-square-foot facility in Presque Isle in 2024.
The 408 Main St. building was one of the locations Caribou had evaluated to house its new police station.
The Granite Group did not return inquiries Tuesday seeking additional information about the expansion.
