A Boot Barn store is set to open on Stillwater Avenue in Bangor, according to banners hanging from the building Tuesday.
The 4-acre property at 710 Stillwater Ave. was previously home to JoAnn Fabrics, which closed last year after the company filed for bankruptcy.
The Bangor store will be Maine’s third Boot Barn location, joining stores in Augusta and South Portland. It comes amid several other notable changes in Bangor’s retail scene, including a Five Below that opened earlier this month and a church that took over the old Books-A-Million property.
The Western-style outfitter is based in Irvine, California, and sells boots and apparel for adults and children. It’s drawn attention in recent years for its relative success and continued expansion as some other large clothing chains have struggled to keep their brick-and-mortar stores open.
In the most recent fiscal year, Boot Barn’s net sales rose nearly 20%, according to a financial report released this month. It also opened 80 new stores, including 25 in the most recent quarter.
CEO John Hazen called it a “record year,” saying, “The broad-based strength across merchandise categories, channels, and geographic regions underscores the strong appeal of the brand and the disciplined execution of our strategic initiatives.”
The company plans to open 70 new stores in the next year.
A senior vice president for Boot Barn did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
