A Bangor man was walking his dog on Tuesday morning at his March Street street home when the animal was shot by a neighbor, he said.
Samuel Robichaud had his 8-year-old pitbull, Blink, on a leash as he took out his trash around 8:48 a.m., he told the Bangor Daily News Tuesday afternoon.
Blink got away from Robichaud and ran toward the neighbor as Robichaud followed close behind, he said.
The neighbor fired a gun four or five times, and the dog was shot in the jaw and neck, Robichaud said.
As of 4:45 p.m., Robichaud said he was waiting to hear if Blink would recover or if she needed to be euthanized.
The Bangor Police Department is investigating the shooting, a spokesperson said on Tuesday. The department did not immediately respond when asked to confirm Robichaud’s account of the shooting.
The BDN is not naming the neighbor because he has not been charged with a crime.
Robichaud provided pictures of Blink, bloodied and being cared for by veterinary professionals.
Blink is a registered service dog for Robichaud’s post traumatic stress disorder, he said.
Robichaud set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the dog’s veterinary bills.
