Eric Dane is still fighting to end ALS even after his death.

“There’s so much more to learn, more to do, and we have to do it now,” Dane said in an I AM ALS public service announcement released on Monday, May 18.

The late actor appeared alongside several notable names, including his former Grey’s Anatomy costars James Pickens Jr., Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers and Caterina Scorsone. The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, also made an appearance in Monday’s video.

“We are ending ALS,” Sterling K. Brown declared in the video, as other stars told viewers that “ALS won’t wait and neither will we.”

The call to action was a show of solidarity from I AM ALS — a patient-led nonprofit organization that aims to find a cure for ALS through policy change and research — amid ALS Awareness Month. Prior to his death, Dane was an ambassador for the nonprofit organization.

Dane died on February 19 at age 53 following a battle with ALS.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” Dane’s family shared in a statement at the time. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Dane shared Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, with Rebecca Gayheart.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement continued. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

What to Know About Eric Dane’s Life, ALS Fight and Legacy After His Death

Following his death, I AM ALS released the Ring Every Bell documentary, which chronicled Dane’s ALS advocacy efforts. In the film, Dane went to Washington, D.C. and advocated for the reauthorization of the ACT for ALS bill, which was initially passed in 2021 and established grant programs for neurodegenerative diseases. It is set to expire in September 2026.

Dane became an advocate for ALS following his diagnosis in 2024. The actor went public with his health battle in April 2025.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane told People in a statement at the time. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

Dane continued his acting career throughout his ALS battle, appearing in the third season of Euphoria, which is currently airing.

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week,” his April 2025 statement continued. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
