Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has announced the wording of the proposed people’s veto of the state supplemental budget that will appear on petitions and potentially on the November ballot.
The question will read as: “Do you want to stop additional funding for state programs and services, more funding for schools, and tax changes by rejecting the state’s 2026 supplemental budget?”
In a release, Bellows said the original wording submitted to her office was not clear, concise or written in a simple way that voters could easily understand, as required by the Maine Constitution.
The applicants have until July 28 to submit at least 67,682 signatures to the secretary of state’s office, which must validate them to pause the supplemental budget pending the outcome of the November election.
