It was a memorable weekend for Husson University’s spring sports teams.

The men’s lacrosse team upset top seed and defending champ Maine Maritime Academy 16-12 for its first-ever North Atlantic Conference title, while the women’s lacrosse team claimed its second straight NAC championship with a 12-9 victory over MMA. And the baseball and softball teams will be the top seeds and hosts for this week’s NAC tournaments.

The Husson men’s lacrosse team, 12-4, will travel to take on Little East Conference titlist Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. a first-round NCAA Division III Tournament game in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

The Husson women, 11-4, will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday for a 1 p.m. NCAA tourney game against Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.

The softball and baseball teams earned the top seeds and will host double-elimination tournaments beginning Thursday.

The Husson women’s softball team, ranked 20th in the country among 393 Division III schools, will be seeking an eighth consecutive NAC championship, and the men will be looking for its seventh in a row.

The women’s tournament will be a six-team affair with Thursday’s 10 a.m. opener at the Robert and Frances O’Keefe Softball Field in Bangor pitting fourth seed UMaine-Farmington (9-6 in the NAC, 14-17 overall) against fifth seed SUNY Delhi (9-7, 14-19).

The noon game will involve third seed SUNY Cobleskill (10-6, 20-19) against No. 6 UMaine-Presque Isle (9-7, 15-18).

Husson (16-0, 33-4) will play the winner of the first game at 2 with second seed Thomas College of Waterville (12-4, 19-18) taking on the SUNY Cobleskill-UMPI winner at 4.

The baseball tourney will be held at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex with Husson (19-5, 21-16) facing fourth seed Vermont State University Lyndon (12-12, 16-23) at noon and second seed SUNY Cobleskill (16-8, 19-19) squaring off against third seed Thomas (14-10, 18-19) at 3 p.m.

The losers will play a 6 p.m. elimination game.

In Sunday’s men’s lacrosse championship game, Dominic Hollenkamp scored seven goals, Kiernan Field had three goals and an assist and Taylor Schwalje had two goals and three assists to pace the Eagles.

Gabe Robinson had two goals and an assist and Drew Clinch and Drew Held had a goal apiece with Clinch also notching three assists and Held picking up two.

Goalie Odin Burk made 13 saves on 25 shots for 12-4 Husson.

Senior Field was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Ryan Parent had five goals and an assist for 10-6 MMA. Tobey Lappin scored three goals and Trey Marcil, Randall Walker, Tristan Reinhold and Bryce Cowell had the other goals.

Marcil had three assists and goalie Ben Kieu made 12 stops on 28 shots.

In the women’s title game, Averi Baker and Kate Boehmcke each had four goals and an assist and Laela Martinez produced three goals for Husson.

Reese Sullivan had the other goal, Gracie Gardner had a pair of assists and goalie Salin Bachor made seven saves on 16 shots.

Sophomore Boehmcke was named the tourney’s MVP.

Lillian Diversi had three goals for MMA. Lauren Robinson and Bella Scolaro each garnered two goals and an assist and Julia Wade had a pair of goals.

Ella Bowes made seven saves on 19 shots for the Mariners.

Also this past weekend, the track teams competed in the New England Division III championships in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Brownville’s Abigail Conlogue became the first Husson woman to score in the New England championships in 10 years when she finished fifth in the javelin throw with a career-long throw of 38:68 meters.
