QUOTE OF THE DAY

“If I’m going to Ellsworth to do some shopping, it pays for the gas. A little bit more, you know, takes me out to lunch or something.”

— Tim Raye of Deer Isle, who has spent his retirement picking up returnables and trash from roadsides in Hancock County.

TODAY’S TOP STORIES

Look behind the scenes at how Janet Mills’ U.S. Senate campaign fell apart. The governor ended her bid to replace U.S. Sen. Susan Collins on Thursday, and Democrats quickly unified behind Graham Platner, who had led Mills handily in recent polls.

The Democratic gubernatorial candidates debated for the first time. Health care and housing discussions revealed some of the clearer contrasts among the candidates.

A sour economy looms over Maine’s upcoming tourism season. People whose livelihoods depend on the state’s $16.5 billion tourist industry are watching uneasily as gas, health care and food costs rise to punishing highs.

A retiree on the Blue Hill peninsula collects roadside trash for gas money and to clean up his town. Tim Raye now cleans up several miles of road a day or more on most clear days.

These are the most expensive Maine homes sold in April. Asking prices are leveling out, but residential properties have remained expensive across the state.

John Merrill, owner of Merrill’s Bookshop in Hallowell, is an outspoken supporter of Graham Platner and was pleased to hear that Janet Mills had dropped out of the U.S. Senate race Thursday. “Her lackluster poll performance and early exit are more a rejection of what she represents than her record in the Blaine House.”
