MADAWASKA, Maine — Madawaska’s fire hydrant system will be offline after Friday, May 8, for three to six weeks as the town’s water district empties the tank on 7th Avenue for repairs, according to a public service announcement posted on the town’s social media page.
The Madawaska Water District will still be able to maintain water service for its customers. However, in the event of a fire, there will not be enough water to use the hydrant system, the announcement stated.
“We met with surrounding fire departments, including Twin Rivers Paper. Plans are in and will include using drop tanks and tankers to haul water into town, just as we do in the out-of-hydrant areas of our community,” the post read.
The town will not issue any fire permits for burning fields, slash or debris when the danger is any greater than low. This doesn’t affect small fires in a pit for cooking that are smaller than three feet across by three feet high.
The town will not issue permits before 9 a.m., which is when the Maine Forest Service announces the level of fire danger. If it is deemed low, then the town will issue a permit for that day.
The repair time depends on the weather conditions, according to town officials.
