It’s easy for young people growing up in today’s political environment to feel powerless in the face of everything happening around us. As an 18 year old, being constantly exposed to news cycles filled with conflict, injustice, and inhumanity makes it difficult to wake up hopeful when it feels like nothing makes a difference.
I knew I wanted to create change, but I had no idea where to begin. That feeling shifted when I was given the opportunity to work on and be involved in Dr. Nirav Shah’s gubernatorial campaign. This experience has shown me that meaningful change is not only possible, but already in motion. The campaign is rooted in the belief that leadership should be grounded in integrity, compassion, and a commitment to serving every community and individual in Maine.
What makes this work so powerful is not just the policies, but the people behind it. From the very beginning, I was welcomed and treated as a valued member of the team, despite my age. From students like me to lifelong residents, there is a shared sense of purpose and urgency — a belief that our voices matter and we each have a role in shaping the future of our state.
Instead of feeling like a bystander, I’ve become part of something active and hopeful.
This campaign has given me a renewed sense of optimism. It has shown me that my voice matters, and that by showing up, speaking out, and working together, real and lasting change is possible.
