A woman was found dead and a man was airlifted to a Portland hospital with serious burns after a house fire late Friday night, according to the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Hiram firefighters responded to 8 Bobbin Mill Road at approximately 11:38 p.m., where they found active fire in the basement and on the second floor of a 2½-story home, said spokesperson Shannon Moss.
Crews found an adult male at the rear of the building with serious burns. He was taken by Life Flight to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Firefighters were told there was a possible second occupant in the house. They discovered an adult female on the upper floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the fire started in the basement and was likely caused by an electrical malfunction. A final determination will be released when the investigation is complete. Positive identification of the woman will be completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.
