Oli Higgins, who was a critical member of Brewer High School’s varsity boys basketball team, is leaving to play for a top basketball prep school.
Higgins announced on his Instagram account Thursday that he would be attending the Newman School in Boston. He will also be reclassifying to graduate in the class of 2029 — adding an extra year to his high school career.
Higgins, who is 6-foot-10, according to his Instagram, was one of Maine’s best high school basketball players and is following a similar path to Cooper Flagg. Flagg attended the prestigious Monteverde Academy in Florida after transferring from Nokomis Regional High School, before becoming 2025’s No. 1 NBA draft pick with the Dallas Mavericks.
Cooper Flagg, a 6-foot-7 wing, became the first freshman to be named Gatorade Player of the Year for either boys or girls basketball in Maine history and was the top choice on the 2022 Bangor Daily News All-Maine team in 2022 after leading Nokomis to a 21-1 record and the school’s first state title in boys basketball.
Partway through last basketball season Brewer’s head coach Carl Parker resigned for “personal reasons.” The Bangor Daily News reported earlier this month that the school hired Aaron Newcomb as the new boys varsity head coach.
