The County Federal Credit Union plans to build a new branch in an empty lot near downtown Bangor that has previously been home to a gas station, a convenience store and an office building.
The proposed bank building at 96 State St., across from a Family Dollar that will soon be closing, would be a one-story structure with a two-lane drive-thru and 18 parking spaces, according to city records. The project was approved for a land development permit on Tuesday by the city’s Planning Board.
Construction is planned to start in May or June and end in February or March of next year. The project will also include improvements to the surrounding sidewalk on State Street and Broadway, according to David Woodward, a WBRC landscape architect and planner who’s working on the project.
“If you’ve been by that site, it’s been kind of run-down,” he said at the Planning Board meeting.
The 0.72-acre lot was sold in September for $350,000, according to city property records. A representative for the credit union did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
The County Federal Credit Union merged with Penobscot County Federal Credit Union in 2021.
