Gov. Janet Mills captured many with her, ” See you in court,” declaration of courage. But she lost me with what I consider her down and dirty in the gutter campaigning.
I’ve had enough of dark, hateful attacks on individuals, ideas, and justice. I’m hungry for leaders with the brave, independent spirit of Henry Knox, General Joshua Chamberlain, Margaret Chase Smith, Bill Cohen, Frances Perkins, George Mitchell — and the Mainers who built a state to be proud of. I’m hungry for leaders with a moral compass; leaders who will talk about their ideas, values, and solutions to problems that are a darn sight more serious than a tattoo.
I shifted support from Mills to Graham Platner after being in rooms where, when asked about Mills he responds with grace. Asked recently to comment on her age, he said this race is not about age. It’s about ideas.
If attack ads are her best ideas, I think Mills needs to drop out. We have enough negative in this country. It’s time to focus on leading with solutions to issues that matter to Mainers: fair treatment, housing, energy, working waterfronts, education for a new era of technology, as a start.
I don’t want more of the dark spirit I believe Susan Collins has enabled. Time to give a positive, future forward candidate a chance. That apparently is not Mills.
