Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Graham Platner unveiled a tax plan Wednesday that includes a 5% tax on wealth over a billion dollars and a “cost of living exemption” from federal income tax for working and middle-class Americans.
Platner said that making the wealthy pay their fair share will prevent local property tax hikes by keeping federal funding flowing to the states.
“If you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to get ahead by demanding that those at the top finally pay their fair share. We free up the resources to make that promise real again,” Platner said.
Platner also suggested reinstating the child tax credit and increasing taxes on mega corporations.
“When corporations dodge their tax bill, it is the rest of us who have to pick up the tab by closing corporate loopholes, we ensure that the giants who profit off of our shared infrastructure, our courts and an educated workforce, finally pay their way, and that we can sustain investment in our schools, safety and the services every community depends on,” Platner said.
Platner said that by changing the tax code, taxes can be lowered for working people, and the resources will help secure Social Security.
