A man has been charged with twice gaining access to the grounds of Kensington Palace.

The Metropolitan Police said Derek Egan, 39, had been charged with allegedly trespassing on a protected site on 21 and 23 December.

Egan, of Hillingdon in western Greater London, has also been charged with breaching bail conditions.

“Egan was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site in Palace Green, Kensington,” a police spokesperson said.

The west London palace, in Kensington Gardens on the edge of Hyde Park, is sometimes home to the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children.

William and Kate’s new family home is Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where an exclusion zone recently came into force.

It is a criminal offence to trespass on a protected site designated under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (Socpa) 2005.

The Wales’s also enjoy a 10-bedroom mansion, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
