A fireworks malfunction over the Fourth of July weekend injured three pyrotechnic workers at Sunday River Ski Resort.
The three were part of a Central Maine Pyrotechnics crew that was putting on a display at the Newry resort, Maine pubic safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Sunday.
Misty Mellor, 50, of Bath, Jeremy Mitchell, 34, of Augusta and Robert Bradford, 30, of Andover were at work on the show when a 5-inch firework shell and mortar tube failed to fire as expected and exploded.
Mellor was significantly injured and was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she is recovering, Moss said.
Mitchell, who was the fireworks show’s lead technician, was treated at Rumford Hospital and released.
Andover had minor injuries and did not need hospital treatment.
No spectators were injured, police said. The rest of the show was canceled.
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating what caused the malfunction.
