The death of a paddleboarder Thursday in Union was a homicide, state officials said.
Maine State Police have identified the woman who died on Crawford’s Pond as Sunshine Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Saturday.
Emergency officials responded to the pond just after 1 a.m. after a report that a paddleboarder was missing. A search team that included game wardens and members of the Union Fire Department and Knox County Sheriff’s office found the woman’s body. Police called the death suspicious at that time.
The chief medical examiner conducted an autopsy later on July 3 and determined Stewart died by homicide, Moss said. The specific cause of death is not being released.
State police are asking anyone who may have seen Stewart on Wednesday, July 2, between 6 and 9 p.m. near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond to contact them at 207-624-7076.
Officials urged the public to remain aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious behavior to police.
More information will be released at a later time, Moss said.
