John Bapst boys hockey earns berth in B North final, while Kents Hill ousts Bangor in A quarters

The John Bapst High School boys hockey team will take on Messalonskee High of Oakland for the Class B North championship on Wednesday night at the Alfond Arena in Orono after both won their semifinal games on Saturday.

Bangor was eliminated from the Class A statewide playoffs as Kents Hill blanked the Rams 6-0 in their quarterfinal on Saturday morning.

Top seed John Bapst earned its berth in the final with a 3-0 victory over fifth seed Hampden Academy while No. 3 Messalonskee ousted second seed Cony of Augusta and its cooperative team 5-3.

John Bapst, now 18-1-1, extended its winning streak to seven games and its unbeaten streak to 12 (11-0-1).

John Bapst, which also has players from Hermon High, beat Messalonskee 3-1 in their only regular season meeting on Jan. 10.

In the other A quarterfinals, top seed Falmouth bested No. 8 St. Dominic Academy of Auburn 5-1; No. 2 Lewiston beat No. 7 Marshwood of Eliot 5-3; and No. 3 Thornton Academy of Saco thumped Windham 11-0.

At Colby College in Waterville, freshman Camden Leighton made 19 saves and John Bapst received two goals from senior center Will Bourgeois, three assists from senior defenseman Nick Needham and a goal and an assist from senior left wing Owen Marryatt to beat Hampden Academy.

Sophomore right wingers Nate Marryatt and Sam Churchard each had an assist.

Bourgeois’ goals were his team-leading 23rd and 24th of the season and Marryatt’s was his 13th.

Leighton’s shutout was his fourth and second in as many games as he shut out Houlton-Hodgdon-Katahdin 5-0 in their quarterfinal, making seven stops.

John Bapst now has 10 shutouts and has allowed only 16 goals in 20 games.

Needham now has a team-leading 26 assists to go with his 13 goals.

Aiden Surran made 22 stops for Hampden Academy, which concluded its season at 11-8-1.

In the other semifinal, Christian Salvadori scored with just 1:05 remaining to break a 3-3 tie and send Messalonskee into the title game.

Ben Platt had tied it for Cony with only 1:26 remaining.

Alex Beckwith added an empty-net goal to clinch it.

Owen Kirk had two goals for 15-5 Messalonskee and Tatum Doucette had a goal and an assist.

Nathan Kirk made 22 saves.

Cooper Clark had a goal and two assists for 15-5 Cony and Connor Callahan had the other goal. Salvadori had an assist to go with his goal and goalie Ryan Bourque finished with 23 stops.

At Kents Hill, Liam Ross and Mathis Moreau each had four-point games and Milan Angyalfi made 21 saves to lead Kents Hill past Bangor.

Bangor had won both regular season games.

Ross had two goals and two assists and Moreau had a goal and three assists for 11-7-1 Kents Hill. Alex Wang had a goal and two assists and Antoine Morin and Alex Gadbois each had a goal.

Cody McCue made 28 saves for 10-8-1 Bangor.
