Adrien Brody made a different kind of history at the 2025 Oscars.

Before the Sunday, March 2, ceremony, Greer Garson held the Guinness World Record for her 5 minute and 30 second speech in 1943. (Garson, who died in 1996, won Best Actress for her role in Mrs Miniver.)

Brody beat the record on Sunday, speaking for a whopping 5 minutes and 40 seconds at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles while accepting the award for Best Actor in a Leading role thanks to his role in The Brutalist. (A Complete Unknown’s Timothée Chalamet, Sing Sing’s Colman Domingo, Conclave’s Ralph Fiennes and The Apprentice’s Sebastian Stan were also nominated in the category.)

“They are already counting me down, OK,” Brody, 51, said as he took the stage. “Thank you God, thank you for this blessed life. If I may just humbly begin to give thanks to the tremendous outpouring of love that I have felt from this world and every individual who treated me with respect and appreciation. I feel so fortunate. Acting is a very fragile profession. It looks very glorious — and in certain moments it is.”

Brody shared that he gained “perspective” as he returned to the Oscars. “No matter where you are in your career or what you accomplished, it can all go away,” he said. “I think what makes this night so special is the awareness of that and the gratitude I have to still do the work that I love.”

Brody noted that the award, while representing the “pinnacle” of a career, can also be the “chance to begin again.” For the next 20 years, Brody said he hopes to “prove” that he is “worthy of such meaningful and important and relevant roles.”

While Brody thanked his team and loved ones, he gave a sweet shout-out to his partner, Georgina Chapman. (Brody and Chapman, 48, were initially spotted in 2019 getting cozy in Puerto Rico.)

“Who has not only reinvigorated my own self worth but also my sense of value and my values,” he said. “And her beautiful children, Dash and India. I know it’s been a roller-coaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life and Popsy is coming home a winner.” (Chapman shares daughter India, 14, and son Dashiell, 11, with ex-husband Harvey Weinstein.)

What Did Adrien Brody Throw at Georgina Chapman Before Oscars Speech?

As music began playing Brody off-stage, he interrupted the tune to share that he wasn’t finished with his speech. “I’m wrapping up. Please, please, please. I’m wrapping up. I will wrap up. Please turn the music off,” he said. “I have done this before.”

After the music stopped playing, Brody quipped, “Thank you. It’s not my first rodeo. But I will be brief, I will not be egregious, I promise.”

Brody then addressed a series of topics, including anti-semitism and racism, before concluding his speech when the music played again.

“OK. I’ll get out of here,” he said. “I love you, I appreciate you all. Let’s fight for what’s right, keep smiling, keep loving one another, let’s rebuild together. Thank you.”
