Auburn police are searching for a suspect after a 16-year-old Lewiston girl was shot in the leg early Wednesday morning.
Police received multiple calls shortly after 5 a.m. in the area of Winter and Dennison streets reporting the shooting, Auburn police said in a Facebook post.
A police officer applied a tourniquet at the scene, and the girl was brought to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.
After a preliminary investigation, police concluded that the victim and her 17-year-old sister were walking on Dennison Street with friends when they were approached by a vehicle.
A black male and white female got out of the vehicle and started assaulting the 17-year-old. During the fight, a gun was fired, striking the 16-year-old. Police did not say who they believe fired the shot.
The victims and witnesses told an Auburn police detective that the 16-year-old girl stabbed the male attacker with her pocketknife in an attempt to stop his assault of her sister. The male suspect fled toward Turner Street before police arrived, Auburn police said.
Police did not indicate how old the suspected attacker is or provide any additional identifying information.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Andrew Shute at [email protected] or 207-333-6651, ext. 2036.
