The election has come and gone, and the Republicans have won with a royal straight flush: president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Supreme Court. Once again, the Democrats are being accused of having “lost touch” with the working class, young voters and various other demographics. This is puzzling.

Flawed as they might be, which party has championed Obamacare, child tax credits, getting big money out of politics, supported unions and public schools, and proposed government investment in affordable housing? Who tried to raise taxes on the super-rich and corporations in order to reduce inequality and the national debt? Who brought down prescription drug prices and tried to assist young people with crippling educational debt? Who supports a woman’s right to an abortion following rape or if her life is in danger? Who attempted to put some checks on domestic abusers and those with mental illness buying semi-automatic weapons? And which party is willing to recognize that climate change poses a deadly threat to rural people and is trying to implement plans to mitigate its effects?

Meanwhile, which party has sought to block each and every one of these commonsense proposals? The Republicans have found themselves in the happy position of “heads I win; tails you lose.” The Democrats are “elites,” while Elon Musk, with his nearly $350 billion, and the cryptocurrency salesmen who were Trump’s biggest donors are Average Joes.

Whatever else, the Republicans now have all the keys to the kingdom, so if they don’t make America great again, they won’t be able to blame the Democrats. Oh wait, Barack Obama was somehow to blame for the Great Recession even though it was well underway even before he was elected. Perhaps the scores of Nobel Prize-winning economists who have predicted higher inflation and national debt will be to blame this time around.

Well Mr. President, good luck with those ” concepts of a plan.” Let’s hope it works out.
