Brewer High School head football coach Scott Flagg has decided not to return for the fall 2024 season.
During Flagg’s four years as head coach, Brewer’s participation numbers rebounded from less than 30 to more than 55, and the team logged a 6-23 overall record through one pandemic-shortened season and three full seasons.
Flagg was previously an assistant football coach at Brewer in 2019, and a head football coach at Hampden Academy. He will continue coaching the junior varsity boys basketball and junior varsity co-ed tennis teams at Brewer, and says the opportunity to watch and mentor his four children in the fall sports season was a reason for his resignation.
“I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve as the head football coach of Brewer High School, and for the support I received from the Brewer School Department administration, my fellow coaches and most of all the dedicated student athletes who made every day on the field memorable and rewarding,” Flagg said.
“I look forward to seeing the development of the [football] program under new leadership, and am also looking forward to having more time available in the fall to watch my own children participate in their sports,” he said.
Brewer Athletic Director Dave Utterback anticipates having a new head football coach in place by the April 1, 2024 School Committee meeting, so they can establish their offseason training programs and select an assistant coaching staff.
Utterback expressed his gratitude for Flagg, who took the reins in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Coach Flagg was what Brewer High School football needed, which was a familiar and safe figure — a voice that the team members could trust in the huddle,” Utterback said. “With so much uncertainty swirling around the student athletes and their families through the pandemic-era of sports, Coach Flagg was a reliable sound board and resource, and we thank him for his leadership in that time.”
