Martha Stewart is having an outdoor swimming pool built into the foundation of her former mansion in Seal Harbor, the Mount Desert Islander reported.
Stewart bought the 17-room mansion on Ox Hill in 2015, and had it torn down in 2021 on grounds that it could not be restored.
At a Sept. 27 Mount Desert planning board meeting, the Islander reported, New York architect Scott Koniecko described how Stewart hatched the vision for the new pool: “Once it was pulled down, it suddenly became obvious, to Martha at least, that it would make a great swimming pool,” he said.
The walls of the former mansion’s foundation will become the walls of the swimming pool with two of them to be extended so that the pool can be roughly 100 feet long and 20 feet wide, according to the Islander.
The planning board gave conditional approval to the project, which includes a pool house with a sauna, kitchen and bathroom, according to the Islander.
