Former University of Maine quarterback Joe Fagnano, who transferred to the University of Connecticut and won the starting job, will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a separated right shoulder in a 35-14 loss to Georgia State last Saturday.
Fagnano got injured on a designed quarterback run play during the second quarter, according to the Hartford Courant. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday.
He had completed four of his nine passes for 60 yards and had rushed for 14 yards on nine carries.
In his UConn debut against North Carolina State the previous week, he completed 14 of 26 passes for 113 yards and was intercepted once. He ran the ball seven times for 18 yards in the 24-14 loss.
Fagnano, a senior, will have at least one year of eligibility remaining.
During his time at UMaine, Fagnano completed 59.7 percent of his passes (461-of-772) for 5,655 yards and 46 touchdowns. His 5,655 yards is seventh-post in school history.
He was intercepted 12 times. He carried the ball 180 times for 535 yards during his career.
Last fall, the Williamsport, Pennsylvania, native completed 208 of his 364 passes (57.1 percent) for 2,231 yards and 15 TDs. He was intercepted six times.
He wound up as the team’s third-leading rusher with a career-high 296 yards on 93 carries. He rushed for three touchdowns as the Black Bears went 2-9.
He rejoined former UMaine head coach Nick Charlton at UConn, where he is the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
UConn is a Football Bowl Subdivision team, which has 22 more scholarships and more resources than the Football Championship Subdivision, which is UMaine’s division.
Fagnano isn’t the only former Black Bear starting at a Football Bowl Subdivision school this fall.
Khairi Manns is starting at outside linebacker for Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes.
Colorado is off to a 2-0 start and is ranked 18th in the country in the latest AP poll.
He has made two tackles in the team’s two wins, 45-42 over Texas Christian and 36-14 over Nebraska.
Manns was a defensive end at UMaine and was the Black Bears’ fifth leading tackler a year ago with 43. He had 6.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.
