Treworgy Family Orchards’ has taken a top national prize for the fourth year in a row for its popular corn maze design.
The Levant orchard said Wednesday that it took the No. 1 spot for corn mazes in USA Today’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards.
That comes after Treworgy’s took the No. 1 spot for its past three years of designs; a 2024 maze portraying the mischievous Peter Rabbit from Beatrix Potter’s beloved children’s books; a 2023 maze depicting a farmer driving a tractor through a pumpkin patch and for its 2022 maze depicting Winnie-the-Pooh.
Treworgy’s has been crafting corn maze designs since 2001.
“Robert McCloskey’s stories capture the heart of Maine life, and ‘Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man’ celebrates the courage and determination of our commercial fishing industry,” said Jonathan Kenerson, co-owner of Treworgy Family Orchards. “This maze allows us to honor both Maine’s agricultural heritage and the fishermen who are such an important part of our state’s economy and culture. The Maine state flag features a farmer and a sailor; we wanted to highlight the twin industries that have defined Maine for generations: farming and fishing.” To honor that legacy, the orchard announced it will offer free maze admission September 20–21 to anyone working in the commercial fishing industry.
This year’s maze depicts a whale design, inspired by Maine author Robert McCloskey’s classic book “Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man.” It is the second design inspired by characters thought up by McCloskey – in 2019, the orchard created a “Blueberries for Sal” themed maze.
Treworgy’s corn maze will be open Tuesdays through Sundays until November. Tickets are $12 during weekdays and $15 on weekends. Children age 2 and younger can explore the maze for free. In homage to the theme of this year’s maze, anyone working in the commercial fishing industry will be able to attend the maze for free on Sept. 20 and 21.
