The body of a Maine man was found Monday across the Canadian border on Campobello Island after he drove his car over the edge of Eastport’s breakwater pier Sunday night, according to police.
Police are not publicly sharing the man’s name as they try to contact his family, Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday. He is believed to be in his late 40s.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police contacted Maine officials Monday after the man’s body was found on Wilson’s Beach on Campobello, a Canadian island directly across the border. The sheriff’s department began looking for the man’s vehicle, which is routine when trying to find where someone may have entered the water. Officials found it submerged in the deep water off Eastport’s breakwater pier, Crabtree said.
“The vehicle was recovered,” Crabtree said. “We believe at this point that he was the sole occupant of the vehicle.”
Canadian officials have the man’s body and are trying to determine the cause of death, but are working closely with the sheriff’s office as the investigation continues, he said.
Crabtree said he expects to provide additional details as the case moves forward over the next couple of days.
