Mainers want fair and honest elections. We, the people, not the Legislature, put voter ID on the ballot. The proposed new law calls for a free ID to those who need one. And if you forget your ID at the polls, you would have four days after you vote to verify your identity.
Thirty-six other states have successfully implemented some form of voter ID laws. I believe it is time for Maine to bring back transparency and accountability to our election process.
The voter ID referendum also addresses absentee ballots by requiring delivery of every absentee ballot on time and keeping absentee voting secure and up to date. A secure drop box can be used by any municipality that requests one. The drop boxes would be monitored and managed by bipartisan collection teams, ensuring, I believe, safe, convenient absentee ballot returns. It also supports establishing a paper trail for absentee ballot requests. Currently, someone can just call and request an absentee ballot.
