The war of words between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs lasted until the final play of their highly anticipated Super Bowl rematch.

As the Eagles entered victory formation at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, September 14, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones attempted to mock Eagles running back Saquon Barkley for his lack of statistical production, despite the Eagles winning the game, 20-17.

“You didn’t even have 100 yards,” Jones, 31, said to Barkley, 28, the 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts barked back, “We won the f***ing game. Shut yo ass up.”

Barkley finished with 88 rushing yards and one touchdown in the rematch of February’s Super Bowl LIX.

Meanwhile, Hurts, 27, completed 15 of his 22 passes for 101 yards. Hurts also rushed for 15 yards on nine carries with a touchdown.

“Take pride in winning, one, and take pride in what is required of you, two,” Hurts said after the game. “The team defensively played lights-out. Offensively we played well when we needed to. And we just need to continue to build.”

Hurts added, “That’s a really good team. We have a ton of respect for them. You have to come in with a sense of focus. Stay patient with yourself. Stay patient with your team. And as a team, we showed up when we needed to the most.”

The Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 21, when they host the Los Angeles Rams.

Tensions ran high throughout the game for the Chiefs, including an outburst by tight end Travis Kelce that was caught on the Fox broadcast.

Kelce, 35, was seen shouting, “I’m sick of this s**t!” to a group of his teammates during the game’s second quarter. He was also seen throwing his helmet in disgust on the sidelines.

During the fourth quarter, a pass from Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, glanced off Kelce’s fingers at the goal line and was intercepted by the Eagles’ Andrew Mukuba.

Mukuba, 22, returned the interception for 41 yards, which helped lead to Hurts’ rushing touchdown that put the Eagles ahead 20-10.

“I threw it a tad too early,” Mahomes, 29, said after the game. “If I could put it on his body, he can catch it, take the hit and get into the end zone.

Sunday’s loss marked the first time Mahomes has lost three consecutive games in his NFL career, dating back to last season’s Super Bowl loss. It’s also the first time since 2014 that the Chiefs have opened the season with two straight losses.

The Chiefs travel to play the New York Giants on Sunday night.
