It wasn’t Only Murders in the Building’s lucky night at the 2025 Emmy Awards.

The Hulu series was nominated for two categories ahead of the Sunday, September 14, event held at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, receiving a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, Shrinking, The Studio and What We Do in the Shadows.

Martin Short was also up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Oliver Putnam, competing against Nobody Wants This’ Adam Brody, The Studio’s Seth Rogen, Shrinking’s Jason Segel and The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White.

The show ultimately lost out in both its categories to AppleTV+’s The Studio, with the show’s inaugural season winning Outstanding Comedy Series and it’s star and creator, Seth Rogan, winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Days before the awards show, Only Murders in the Building kicked off season 5 with the show’s lead trio — Short Steve Martin and Selena Gomez — attempting to uncover details surrounding the death of beloved doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca).

“Our beloved doorman has a hold of a large amount of tenants in our buildings’ secrets and many other things about his life were interesting for me to sort of explore. The very nature of a doorman in a pre-war apartment building, a New York City in 2025,” creator John Hoffman told Decider in 2024. “[It] felt very, very interesting to look at in terms of what our show has always been about, which is classic meets newer. We really are dipping our toe into a New York City in season 5 that feels particularly ripped from the headlines in certain ways that we’ve not done before.”

While filming, Michael Cyril Creighton — who plays fellow Arconia resident Howard — shared that the cast tries “not to talk about” the show’s spoilers but they do exchange ideas on the set.

“There are certain crew members that you trade theories and you’re like, ‘I think it’s this person because of such and such.’ That’s always sort of fun. It’s more like a game of theorizing and guessing, but most people generally know,” Creighton exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of the season 5 premiere. “A lot of us don’t want to know who it is until that script comes out. But my eyes are always open. I’m always watching how people are acting on set to see if they’re acting suspicious when the cameras are off.”

The first three episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 5 can be streamed on Hulu now. New episodes will air on Hulu every Tuesday until the October 28 finale.
