The Constitution of the United States reflects the Founding Fathers immense value placed on civic duty through its various articles and amendments, providing clear guidelines for the responsibilities of citizens. Voting, one of the most fundamental civic duties, is rooted in the very framework of our Constitution.
The preamble itself resonates with civic responsibility: “We the People….” It reflects the collective will and active participation of the citizenry in shaping and sustaining the government.
Every citizen needs faith that the election process is fair and accurate. I believe a big part of that is to verify the identity of every voter.
Last fall, during the general election, I had the privilege of collecting signatures on the Voter ID for ME petition. It was a first for me, so I had no idea what to expect. To my amazement, after realizing the purpose of the petition, the majority of voters responded, “Where do I sign?”
People who recently moved to Maine were surprised we didn’t have voter ID requirements. I heard repeatedly the same belief I have when it comes to election integrity: No secure vote, no voice, which is the foundation of our republic.
I believe Mainers need to stand united in support of Voter ID to strengthen Maine’s elections by increasing transparency and accountability.
“We the people….” secured far more than the number of signatures required to get our citizen’s initiative on the ballot. Now, “We the people….” need to vote it into law.
Vote “yes” for Voter ID for ME Nov. 4!
