As a mom, it has been a priority of mine to teach my children the importance of civic involvement. Their ability to cast a vote is not only an honor and privilege, but it is a responsibility we hope they will take seriously. We may not have been able to play a part in originally securing men’s and women’s right to have their voices heard, but we can vote to secure and protect this right for generations to come.
In light of recent events, I think we should all agree that increased accountability, transparency, and confidence in this area is much needed. I believe requiring an ID is a major step toward ensuring electoral fairness.
Thirty-six states already request or require some form of Voter ID, so it only makes sense to me that Maine should also. I do not think it will limit our right to vote; it will protect it. Included in this proposed law is a provision for free IDs to those who need one and ample time to present them.
The ability to influence policy, choose leaders who will represent us well, and exercise power to shape our communities and country is a weighty task. If something is that important and was worth fighting for, isn’t it also worth protecting now?
Please join me in voting “yes” on Nov. 4 to require voter ID in Maine. Help preserve Maine as a place where your vote matters in this historic effort of the people, by the people, and for the people.
