The International Court of Justice has issued multiple emergency orders recognizing a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza. These orders remind every country — including the United States — that we have a duty to prevent genocide and to avoid complicity.
The International Association of Genocide Scholars, the leading body of experts worldwide, has formally declared that Israel’s actions constitute genocide. Leading jurist William Schabas agrees there is “a very strong case” under the Genocide Convention.
This is not an abstract debate. The United States is supplying weapons and funding while entire families are destroyed. Under international law, that makes us directly responsible.
Maine’s Senate delegation — Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins — cannot continue business as usual. I believe they must support a permanent ceasefire, end the flow of weapons, and ensure life-saving humanitarian aid reaches Gaza.
The law is clear. The evidence is overwhelming. Now the question is whether our leaders will uphold their sworn duty.
