‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Abandons Book for Belly’s ‘Emily in Paris’ Trip

The Summer I Turned Pretty has completely abandoned the events in Jenny Han‘s book series to wrap up Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah’s love triangle in a new way.

During the Wednesday, September 3, episode of the hit Prime Video series, Jeremiah’s (Gavin Casalegno) decision not to marry Belly (Lola Tung) has repercussions for everyone around them. While she immediately got on a plane — without speaking to Conrad (Chris Briney) first — Jeremiah spent the entire episode either drunk or angry with anyone in his path.

Jeremiah initially took out his anger on Laurel (Jackie Chung) and shifted the blame to Conrad before finally speaking to Belly (but more on that later). The day after his canceled wedding was a tough one for Jeremiah, but it all led up to him being consoled by his father as he prepared for the next chapter of his life without Belly.

Speaking of Belly, she kicked off her Emily in Paris-inspired adventure with more obstacles than expected. It turned out she didn’t have a spot in the study abroad program like she originally thought, which almost forced her to give up and go home. Before she could book a flight back to the U.S., her backpack was stolen, leading her on a side quest throughout Paris for the day.

‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Book Ending Explained: Who Did Belly End Up With?

Belly tracked down her missing stuff at a rave, where she made some new friends, attacked the guy who took her backpack and realized she needed to stay to find herself. Once again, The Summer I Turned Pretty had Us suspending our disbelief since Belly’s biggest issue at the start of the episode was not having a visa — and that still wasn’t solved by the time she chose to stay overseas for an undetermined amount of time.

Back across the pond, Steven (Sean Kaufman) and Taylor (Rain Spencer) finally got back together just before the series finale. Conrad also had what was probably one of the worst days of his life as just about everyone blamed him for the wedding not taking place. Jenny Han had the eldest Fisher brother running around with clean clothes and red Gatorade for Jeremiah — only to get mocked, taunted and shamed — which probably made him reconsider his decision to stay in Boston instead of flying back to California.

Which Book Scenes Are in the ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3 Trailer?

The Summer I Turned Pretty now has only two episodes left before the show comes to an end. While the first two seasons (and most of the third) were based on Han’s YA book series, the final episodes are a complete departure from what was on the page. As fans of We’ll Always Have Summer Know, the third book ended with Belly not marrying Jeremiah before an epilogue filled in the blanks about how the rest of her college days wrapped up. She eventually got married years later — to Conrad.

Han and the show’s cast have made it clear that anything could happen as The Summer I Turned Pretty finishes its run. The only constant viewers can count on is Taylor Swift needle drops, with Wednesday’s episode featuring “You’re on Your Own Kid” and “How Did It End?”

The Summer I Turned Pretty airs on Prime Video Wednesdays.
