Last week in Searsport, protesters demonstrated against Sen. Susan Collins in opposition to her support of many of the Trump administration’s policies. Many went there because she will not hold a town hall meeting or meet with her constituents. I know, as I have tried. What was her response to the protesters? “This is not the Maine I know.” My response to her is: “This is not the United States I know.”
In the U.S. I know, an unqualified, known anti-vaccine conspiracist, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., would never have been confirmed as the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Despite the opposition of many health care organizations in the country, Collins voted for him.
As a school nurse, I fought for a stronger school vaccine exemption law in Maine. This is the Maine I know. Fighting for what is right for the health and safety of our community.
I believe Collins’ actions make her complicit in President Donald Trump’s agenda. I hope Mainers will not remain silent, as this is not the Maine I know.
