Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea is claiming she was robbed of some precious hardware while in New York City for the 2025 US Open.

“Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 @thefiftysonesta please give it back!” Cirstea, 35, wrote via her Instagram Story on Saturday, August 30. “It has NO material value, just sentimental value! It would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Sorana.”

Cirstea’s trophy was allegedly stolen from The Fifty Sonesta Hotel New York, located in midtown Manhattan.

Us Weekly has reached out to the hotel and the NYPD for comment.

In a statement to CBS News, the general manager of the hotel said, “We are in close communication with our valued guest regarding the reported missing item. Our director of safety and security, a retired NYPD detective, is personally overseeing the investigation.”

Cirstea, the No. 41 ranked women’s tennis player in the world, won the trophy at the Tennis in the Land tournament on Sunday, August 24. She defeated American Ann Li in the final, 6-2, 6-4.

The win marked Cirstea’s third WTA singles title and her first in four years.

Cirstea competed in both singles and doubles at the 2025 US Open.

In singles, Cirstea lost to Karolina Muchova in the second round on Thursday, August 28. Cirstea and her doubles partner, Anna Kalinskaya, lost to Americans McCartney Kessler and Peyton Stearns in the first round on Friday, August 29.

After Cirstea took to social media to announce the alleged theft of her trophy, the Tennis in the Land tournament stepped up to the plate.

“We can’t let you go home without any hardware!” the tournament posted via Instagram on Sunday, tagging an awards and apparel brand and vowing to “make things right.”

Cirstea reposted the message to her Instagram Story on Monday, September 1, alongside three red-heart emojis.

The tennis star boasted about her Tennis in the Land victory via Instagram last weekend, posting a photo of herself hosting the trophy.

“Thank you @tennisintheland @wta for the wonderful week,” Cirstea wrote on August 24. “This title made me very happy ☺❤🎾🏆.”

After winning the tournament in Cleveland, Cirstea thanked the fans in attendance for their support all week.

“From the first match of [qualifying], I felt the energy, I felt welcome, and I really loved the city and the vibe,” Cirstea said after defeating Li in the final. “You could see on the court how relaxed and how much I was enjoying [myself]. I really wanted to stay as long as possible here, so I’m very happy that I managed to do that.”

She added, “It’s been a special week for me. I really just came here to play some matches with absolutely zero expectations.”
