A plane apparently sank on Flagstaff Lake in western Maine on Monday afternoon, possibly after its pontoons malfunctioned during a landing.
No injuries were immediately reported in the Labor Day incident, which came two days after a pontoon boat flipped on the lake and killed two New York women.
Little other information was immediately available about the Labor Day plane incident on the lake. Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols confirmed that he had heard “third-hand” about the incident, but referred other questions to the Maine Warden Service.
“It sounds more like a plane landed and had an issue with one of its pontoons,” Nichols said.
Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the warden service, said it was assisting with a crash on the lake, but referred additional questions to the Maine State Police.
Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine State Police, said the Frankling County Sheriff’s Office was the primary agency overseeing the investigation and referred any questions to it.
ABC affiliate WMTW 8 shared a photo that a witness reportedly took of the plane, in which it appears to be floating upside down in the water.
The crash happened just two days after two women died and a third was critically injured when the pontoon boat flipped on the lake, reportedly after its bow began to dip into the water and the driver tried to raise it.
Farhana Nasir, 53, of Selden, New York, and Kiran Akbar, 23, of Lake Grove, New York, died at the scene. Noor Nasir, 22, of New York, was flown to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in critical condition.
