Happy Labor Day weekend! Whether you’re enjoying the festivities or dreading the official end of summer, the holiday weekend should give you ample time for a nice movie viewing session.

That’s why Watch With Us has assembled a list of great movies that are perfect for the holiday weekend — be they films that are getting remakes or movies related to the “back to work” theme of the holiday.

All these films are available on Amazon Prime Video — check them out anytime during the long weekend.

‘The War of the Roses’ (1989)

Before the 2025 movie The Roses starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, there was The War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as the Roses, a couple going through an increasingly nasty and aggressive divorce. Stylishly directed by Danny DeVito, who also plays their divorce attorney in the film, this movie brings major laughs — albeit very dark ones.

As the Roses seek increasingly petty revenge against each other, things spiral ever more out of control, leading to jaw-dropping escalations you won’t believe. This one is available to rent on Prime rather than stream, but trust us — it’s worth it.

7 Must-Watch Comedy Movies on Amazon Prime Video (August 2025)

‘The Intern’ (2015)

Though far from the best film by legendary director Nancy Meyers, The Intern is a cute and charming comedy that’s thematically perfect for Labor Day viewing. It follows Ben (Robert De Niro), a bored retiree who decides to re-enter the workforce as a “Senior Intern” at an online fashion brand founded by Jules (Anne Hathaway).

As Ben adjusts to the quirky lifestyle of a tech startup, so different from the finance world he once knew, he winds up helping Jules reevaluate her personal life and recommit to her business ideals. A sweet movie about old and new styles coming together, The Intern might make it a little easier to get down to business.

‘Knives Out’ (2019)

Maybe you’re spending the long weekend at a family getaway. If that’s the case, take comfort in knowing that it’s probably going better than the one in Knives Out. When the Thrombey family gathers for a birthday celebration at wealthy patriarch Harlan Thrombey’s (Christopher Plummer) estate, things quickly take a turn when the celebrated crime writer is found dead.

8 New Movies to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Hulu and More

The enigmatic detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) arrives, hired by persons unknown, to solve the murder — was it Marta (Ana de Armas), Harlan’s nurse and the sole beneficiary of his will? Ransom (Chris Evans), his ne’er-do-well grandson? Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis), his spoiled daughter? His son Walt (Michael Shannon)? Or someone outside the family?

Director Rian Johnson instantly creates an iconic character in Blanc, kicking off a franchise that has a third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

‘Late Night’ (2019)

You may not remember this heartwarming workplace comedy about comedians, but it stars Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling and comes packed with laughs about the struggles of making your way in a new workplace. Thompson plays Kathryn Newbury, a late-night talk show host who is struggling with poor ratings — leading to the impromptu hiring of Molly (Kaling), an Indian-American woman who works at a chemical plant and has no actual comedy experience.

But as they find their rhythm together, each woman learns from the other about comedy, diversity and life. Written by Kaling (her first feature film) and helmed by Freakier Friday director Nisha Ganatra, Late Night is a perfect movie to get you ready to dive back into work and into following your passions.

Led by Senior Editor and experienced critic Jason Struss, Watch With Us’ team of writers and editors sees almost every movie and TV show from the distant past to the present to determine what’s worth your time and money. Our countless hours of multimedia consumption — combined with years of experience in the entertainment industry — help us determine the best movies and TV shows you should be streaming right now.

To be considered “the best,” these films and series can be visually engaging, intellectually stimulating or simply just fun to watch, but the one trait they must have is that they are all, in some way, entertaining. We then check which platform they are streaming on and how you can access them as a subscriber. No algorithm nonsense or paid endorsements here — our recommendations are based purely on our love and interest for the films and shows we love.
