A video captured the moment a small plane crashed in Bangor on Friday afternoon, killing the only person on board.
The 48-second video shows the single-engine Cessna touch down on the runway before pulling back up and cartwheeling into the ground. Jaxon Cook, a 9-year-old from Vassalboro, shot the video, his mom Kristie Babb said.
One person died in the crash that happened around 1:20 p.m., Bangor Fire Chief Geoffrey Low said. That person’s identity is not yet confirmed.
There were no other people on board, Low said.
Jaxon loves planes and wants to fly for The Blue Angels, a demonstration squadron of the United States Navy, Babb said. The weather was beautiful Friday and the family decided to go to Bangor to watch the bigger planes land.
Jaxon hoped to see the fighter jets from the nearby military base but instead he captured video of the crash, Babb said.
He had seen plane crashes on video before but it was scary and intense to see it in person, Babb said. Everyone is still in shock, she said.
“To see it with your own eyes, it sets you back a little bit,” Babb said. “It’s crazy.”
Jaxon still wants to be a pilot, he said.
Babb called Bangor police after the crash and they went to the police station to give them a copy of the video.
The crash closed the runway at Bangor International Airport and it reopened shortly after 4:30, airport spokesperson Aimee Thibodeau said. The investigation is on-going, she said.
The single-engine Cessna A185F’s tail number is N714HE. It landed in France on Saturday, online flight records show. The plane then flew to Wick, United Kingdom, to Reykjavik, Iceland, and to Narasuaq, Greenland, on Monday.
The plane stayed in Greenland until Thursday when the pilot flew to Goose Bay, Labrador. The pilot departed from Goose Bay at 9:21 a.m. Friday and flew to Bangor.
