A bullet penetrated the office of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid last year while he was working inside.
The incident happened at the Chiefs practice facility in May 2024, according to the Kansas City Star. Reid, 67, was working alone inside his office when a bullet was fired from the outside of the building and broke through the glass.
The bullet lodged in a wall between his bathroom and the entry door to Reid’s office, roughly 15 feet from where the head coach was sitting at his desk. Reid was not struck or injured by the bullet, according to a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
Two other bullets struck the Chiefs’ facility on the same day, with one hitting the floor above Reid’s office and another hitting an outdoor air conditioning unit.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shootings. An investigation remains ongoing, including from where exactly the shots were fired.
“There is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization,” Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Capt. Jacob Becchina told the Star. “Because the building was occupied at the time of the bullet coming through the window, the case is being investigated as an aggravated assault.”
Reid’s office now has reinforced bulletproof glass, which was installed shortly after the incident.
The Kansas City Chiefs organization reportedly kept the shooting under wraps, with “many Chiefs players and staff” unaware it ever happened until the Star broke the news on Wednesday, August 20.
Gunfire was heard shortly after midnight on May 4, 2024, according to an incident report.
Becchina said overnight security told police officers that someone heard “a noise and observed what appeared to be a bullet hole in a window.”
The shooting happened roughly three months after the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

In the six-part ESPN docuseries The Kingdom, available to stream now on ESPN+, Reid detailed his long, intense work days which often begin with him leaving home around 5 a.m. and getting to the Chiefs’ facilities before anybody else is around.
Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, explained how Reid’s work ethic also extends into the offseason.
“He loves football so much,” Mahomes told ESPN last year. “Even in the offseason, he’ll text me, ask me questions, do I like this play or do I like that play? He loves being around the game and being able to enjoy it. We’re having so much fun. It’s not so much the winning. We legit have so much fun at the building that I think it would be hard for him to walk away.”
The Chiefs open the 2025 regular season in Brazil on September 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
