When I was a wee lad, one of my favorite toys disappeared from our front yard. We lived on a side road in a small town and might see 15 cars pass our house during a long summer day. I was convinced that a boy a few years older than me had availed himself of it as he walked by on one of his several trips by our house each day.
I expressed to my grandfather my desire to visit his house and forcibly retrieve my property. My grandfather was a large and very powerful man, and I was attempting to talk him into going with me. My grandfather told me that, even if the toy were there, it would be impossible to prove that it was indeed my toy. He said that I should use this experience to learn to take care of my belongings.
His sage words were “too many people don’t lock the barn until after the horse is gone!” and “it’s easier to keep something than to get it back.”
We presently have a chance to lock the barn before the horse is gone. I believe we need Voter ID to secure elections for a stronger Maine. Vote yes on Question 1 on Nov. 4.
