Graham McTavish, known for his role as Dougal McKenzie in the popular television series “Outlander,” attended the 46th Annual Maine Highland Games and Scottish Festival over the weekend, marking a significant milestone for the event in its new Windsor location.
The Scottish actor participated in the festival held Aug. 16 and 17 at the Windsor Fairgrounds, which featured traditional Highland athletics alongside the Scottish Men’s Heavy Athletics World Championship. McTavish participated in ceremonial activities including throwing the inaugural Braemar stone, a heavy “standing” version of the shot put where athletes cannot take a running start.
The year marked the first time the Maine Highland Games relocated to Windsor from its previous venue. The event typically draws thousands of visitors interested in Scottish culture and heritage.
McTavish, who also owns a whiskey company, hosted fireside chats and a Q&A, though unexpected state licensing restrictions prevented him from offering whiskey samples.
Athletic competitions ran from approximately 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., showcasing traditional Highlands games such as the caber toss — in which athletes flip a large, tapered log end over end to test strength and balance — along with the Scottish hammer throw and stonelifting.
Now in its 46th year, the Maine Highland Games continue to celebrate Scottish and Celtic heritage through athletics, music and cultural traditions.
