The odds of crossing paths with your doppelganger is incredibly slim — 1 in 1 trillion, according to science.
So imagine the Clinton police Cpl. Mike Conners’ surprise when he answered the phone one day only to find that Cpl. Mike Conners of the Clinton Police Department was on the other end.
No, this isn’t a Fyodor Dostoevsky novel. Just a scammer who, apparently unbeknownst to him, managed to defy the odds.
Conners told CBS affiliate WABI that the fake Conners claimed the real Conners had been indicted by a grand jury for unpaid fines. A grand jury only considers felony cases, not those involving unpaid fines.
That’s when the fake Conners began pressuring the real Conners to give him Apple gift cards or be arrested, according to WABI.
So Conners decided to turn the tables on his double and string him along.
“I just kind of kept him on the line and wasted his time. I’m still waiting for Officer Conners from Clinton PD to come arrest me,” Conners told WABI.
Conners stressed that Mainers should hang up on such calls and reach out to the police department the scammers claim to represent. Police will never ask you for gift cards to take care of unpaid fines.
