Prime Video’s Butterfly ended with a shocking character death — and a kidnapping — but where would the show go in season 2?

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Daniel Dae Kim teased the plan for the show, saying, “I have some idea of what has happened but I don’t want to put the cart before the horse because we don’t have a renewal yet.”

Kim, 57, who plays David, is excited at the potential going forward. “But if we’re lucky enough to get a renewal, I know for certain that there are certain twists and turns that I’d like to see put into place,” he added.

Based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series, Butterfly follows a former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea after faking his death. He has to resurface to save his daughter Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), who has followed in his footsteps as a spy-turned-assassin.

Which TV Shows Are Renewed in 2025-2026?

Throughout season 1, David and Rebecca reconnected to take down a common enemy. Rebecca also came to terms with the revelation that David got married — and had a daughter — after disappearing from her life. The finale, which premiered on Wednesday, August 13, initially ended on a good note as the family of four enjoyed a dinner out together.

Rebecca and David’s wife went to the bathroom, but after they were gone for too long, David checked on them to find his wife bleeding out and his eldest child gone. It remained unclear who took Rebecca — or if she left by choice.

Before the show was released, Kim spoke to Us about getting the chance to lead a show where he is consistently performing extensive stunts.

“I can tell you it was definitely a pro,” Kim shared. “I love doing action. I love doing stunts. I’ve done it through most of my career. But I’ll also tell you, when I was waking my old bones up at 3 a.m. it felt like a con.”

Kim was “really glad” he was able to do as much as he did, adding, “I hope I’ll be able to for a long time to come.”

According to the actor, there was only one stunt deemed too risky for him to attempt himself.

“There was something I wasn’t allowed to do and that was a repelling stunt from the top of the building to the ground floor,” he recalled. “I thought I was going to do it up until that morning and a word came down from on high that I was not allowed to.”

Kim also picked up some unexpected skills after playing a spy. “It really taught me how to surveil someone in a quiet and clandestine way,” he shared. “Also just how much distance to keep and how frequently to be checking your position.”

Butterfly is currently streaming on Prime Video.
