In 2004, Mel Gibson co-wrote and directed The Passion of the Christ, an R-rated Biblical epic that was the biggest hit of his career behind the camera.

Although over two decades have passed since the film’s release, Gibson is set to make The Passion of the Christ 2.

Lionsgate has stepped up to give the sequel a wide release and details are starting to become public.

While there are still some lingering questions about the sequel, Watch With Us has put together a guide to everything you need to know about The Passion of the Christ 2.

It’s going to be called The Resurrection of the Christ. However, it’s no longer a single film. Gibson is splitting the sequel into two parts, which effectively makes The Passion of the Christ into a trilogy.

Story details have yet to be disclosed, but Jesus was resurrected at the end of the first film. Presumably, that means the sequel movies are actually midquels that take place in-between scenes of the original.

When Will ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ Be Released in Theaters?

The Resurrection of the Christ Part 1, will debut on March 26, 2027, which is also Good Friday. Forty days later, The Resurrection of the Christ Part 2 will be released on May 6, 2027, which is Ascension Day.

Will Jim Caviezel Return as Jesus Christ?

Yes. Gibson has confirmed that Jim Caviezel will reprise his role as Jesus from the first film. Gibson also stated that CGI and special effects will be used to make Caviezel appear as young as he was in the original.

Will Any of the Other Cast Members Return?

It’s unclear at the moment. The only confirmed returning actor is Caviezel.

Gibson shared some tidbits about the sequels during a guest appearance on Joe Rogan‘s podcast earlier this year.

“There’s a lot required because [the script is] an acid trip,” said Gibson. “I’ve never read anything like it. There’s some crazy stuff. In order to tell the story properly, you have to start with the fall of the angels. You’re in another realm. You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol.”

“You got to have [Satan’s] origin,” added Gibson. “I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things about to depict that. I’ve been thinking about that for a long time. It’s going to require a lot of planning. I’m not sure I can pull it off. It’s super ambitious, but I’m going to take a crack at it … It’s about trying to find a way in that’s not cheesy or obvious. It’s almost like a magic trick. [The story] goes from the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.”
