The suspect in a fatal shooting Friday afternoon has been located according to Maine State Police, but few other details are known, including whether the suspect is alive.
Police received numerous 911 calls around 1:55 p.m. reporting a shooting at the intersection of Route 302 and Landing Road, a major commercial intersection.
First responders found a man who had been shot. Despite attempts by citizens to take life-saving measures, the man died, Windham Police Chief Kevin Schofield said at a news conference Friday evening.
Police began searching an area that went into several surrounding towns, “specifically Raymond,” Schofield said.
A shelter-in-place order was issued and kept in place until 7 p.m.
Witnesses provided information that helped police locate a suspected vehicle, Schofield said. “During a subsequent investigation throughout the afternoon, the suspect in the shooting was located,” he said.
Maine State Police Maj. Lucas Hare said the identities of the people involved are being withheld until detectives can speak with family members, and an autopsy will be performed on the victim fo the shooting.
Asked if the suspect was found dead or if he was arrested, Hare said “I just said he was located.”
“As I said, the lone suspect has been located. There is no threat to the public,” Hare said.
Asked by a member of the media to clarify whether the suspect was alive or dead, Hare said: “All I said was he had been located.”
